At 7:50 a.m. on an oppressively hot June day, pediatric dentist Dr. Aaron Miller, wearing jeans held up by a leather belt with a large silver buckle, swaps out his tennis shoes for a pair of faded-black cowboy boots with tan stitching. Over his black polo shirt, he places a sand-colored jacket he pulls from a row of bespoke lab coats lining his office closet. Only one of the coats still bears its original brown fringe; he chooses one without, as fringe gets in the way of patient examinations.
Miller talks fast and moves quickly around his Manheim Township-based practice, where western-movie illustrations, cowboy hats, cactus stickers, guitars and a talking-horse head adorn the walls. Country music plays softly in the background, “Toy Story 2” airs on the TV and toys are scattered throughout the office.
When the first patient walks through the door a little before 8 a.m., Miller and his team greet them with a “howdy.”
